Taroh Political Youth Vanguard Disowns Endorsement of Sen. Useini by Taroh Elders

BEING THE TEXT OF A PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY TAROK POLITICAL YOUTH VANGUARD.

Our attention has been drawn to a press statement trending on social media platforms to the effect that the Tarok Elders Forum has endorsed the gubernatorial aspiration of Sen. (Gen) Jeremiah Timbut Useni as the sole aspirant of Tarok extraction for the 2019 gubernatorial elections in Plateau State.

In a statement signed by Selchang Miner and Danjuma Rimdan as Chairman and Secretary of the Tarok Elders’ Forum respectively, the press release purported that Sen. Useni represents the interest of all stakeholders in the affairs of Tarok land, while calling on other ethnic nationalities in the state to support Useni’s aspiration. We want to state without equivocation that nothing can be farther from the truth.

In as much as we would welcome a genuine consensus where a credible Tarok aspirant would be chosen from among the plethora of Tarok aspirants to gun for the governorship of the state come 2019, and enjoy the support of his co-aspirants and the entirety of the Plateau voting population for the next gubernatorial elections, we would not be cajoled into accepting a fraudulent and self serving contraption by a group of elders to subvert the wishes and aspirations of a larger majority in an effort to massage the egos of one of their own.

For the avoidance of doubt, we are not directly or indirectly associated with any of the Tarok aspirants, neither are we fronting for any particular aspirant, but we canvass for a level playing ground where every eligible contestant would be allowed to exercise his franchise. Our position is predicted on the fact that the candidate being touted as the endorsed aspirant of the elders, offends the spirit and letters of the Not Too Young to Run campaign being championed in Nigeria, that metarmophosed in the promulgation of an Act to that effect.

Not only did the position of the elders portray the Tarok nation as lacking the requisite human resources to turn around the fortune of the state, by presenting a man who should be enjoying his retirement after a meritorious national service, but also, for their selfish interests, are telling the world that the army of eligible Tarok sons and daughters vying for the governorship cannot be trusted with leadership, which action we consider treacherous.

If we keep mute to this brazen injustice and outright mortgage of our future by those who have already build empires for their tenth generations, we shall forever remain in their whimsical servitude. The chain of this generational supremacy must be cut now.

On this note, we fully align with the position of the Langtang North and South PDP to the effect that any Tarok son and daughter aspiring for the governorship of Plateau state under the party should go ahead and obtain their expression of Interest and nomination forms and go ahead with their campaign, as their fate can only be decided by the party at the primary elections.

The Langtang North and South chapters of the PDP frowned at the elders for purportedly conducting a consensus for PDP aspirants without deeming it fit to involve the party in the process, which action further goes to confirm the premeditated position of the so called elders for organizing the consensus.

The elders’ bias was made manifest by their outright rejection of the report of the 13-man consensus committee that favoured a different aspirant from the one they presented. The committee was in the best position to arrive at a more liberal consensus aspirant, because of its composition which encompasses ALL interests in Tarok land. But coming up with a different committee comprising of only the elders to review the report of a larger committee can only breed suspicion and ill feelings among the aspirants.

As we end this press release, we make bold to say, without mincing words, that the hallmark of eldership is speaking the truth and standing by it at all times; but where elders chose to act in a manner inconsistent with their social standing, they are likely to lose their respect in the eyes of the younger generation, and the society in general.

Signed: INNOCENT Tali, Chairman

Manchang Nimnan: Secretary.i

Plateau governorship race; Southern Zone PDP leadership disown decision of TAROH elders to anoint a candidate to stand elections among several aspirants.

As Plateau governorship race for 2019 hots up on the Plateau ,Southern zone leadership of the Peoples Democratic party has disclosed that it has not reach an agreement on consensus governorship candidate among the Taroh( Langtang) governorship aspirants to contest the forth coming PDP primaries in the state.

Plateau Southern Zone Vice Chairman of the party Hon Domle V Simon and the state Legal adviser of the party in a joint communique issued to news men in Jos after the meeting of the Taroh Nation stakeholders in respect of consensus governorship aspirant, said consensus is best made after the aspirants have purchased their forms which will enable concerned stakeholders to know who among the aspirants is serious in his aspiration.

According to them, some of the aspirants are unknown to their party’s architectural arrangement as these aspirants have not even visited their electoral wards, local governments, zones and the state levels of they party as required.

They alleged most of the Taroh Elders l in the committee for selection of governorship aspirant were APC affiliates that are sympathizers of Governor Simon Lalong who is the sole governorship candidate of All Progressive Congress in the state.

” That PDP has no area of connection s whatsoever with APC,and so the members of the APC cannot and should not mediate for the PDP in a case like this ” they stressed.

They resolved that those of them who are members of peoples Democratic party in Langtang north and South local government councils have distanced themselves from any decision that would be arrived at by these pro- governor Lalong sympathizers within Taroh Nation.

It would be recalled that the decision by Taroh Elders committee to support one of the several Taroh governorship aspirants for Plateau 2019 governorship aspiration generated disapproval among the supporters of former FCT ministerlLT General Jeremiah Useni, Senator Victor Lar, Jimmy Cheto ,Arch Samuel Jatau and host others wishing to run for governorship race in the state.

INEC to print 16.5m PVCs before 2019 elections –Chairman

The Independent National Electoral Commission says it will print 16 , 500 ,192 Permanent Voters ’ Cards and make them available for collection by citizens ahead of the 2019 general elections.

INEC Chairman , Prof . Mahmood Yakubu , disclosed this at the regular meeting of the commission with the Resident Electoral Commissioners on Thursday in Abuja.

Yakubu said that for a period of 16 months , from April 27 , 2017 to August 31 , it registered a total of 14 ,551 ,482 new voters during its nationwide Continuous Voter Registration .
He said if the figure was added to the existing register of 69 ,720 ,350 voters, it meant that the nation now had a voter population of 84 ,271 ,832.

He explained that the figure might drop slightly after the commission must have run the list through the Automatic Fingerprint Identification System .

“In addition to fresh registration , the Commission is also processing 769 ,917 requests for intra and inter -State transfers as well as 1 ,178 ,793 requests for replacement of lost , damaged or cards with misspelt names or incorrect personal details of voters as required by law.

“This means that the Commission has to print a total of 16,500,192 PVCs and make them available for collection by citizens ahead of the 2019 general elections .
“Already , the Commission has printed the PVCs for those registered in 2017 and delivered them to states for collection.

“I can also confirm that the PVCs for 2 .7 million voters registered in the first quarter of 2018 have been printed and will be delivered to the states next week .
“We wish to reassure Nigerians that every registered voter will have his /her PVC available for collection before the general election.

“The collection of PVCs will continue until one week to the 2019 general elections . We shall ensure that the process of collection is simplified with minimum inconvenience to citizens.

“We will also ensure that information about the collection of PVCs is widely disseminated .
“Already , we are partnering with telecommunication companies to send bulk text ( sms ) messages to citizens for the collection of their PVCs ’’

He added that after running the AFIS , the Commission would present a detailed analysis of the voter register , not only by state and gender , but also by age group and occupation.

Yakubu appealed to Nigerians to seize the opportunity of the ongoing nationwide display of the particulars of new voters for claims and objections as required by law.

“By doing so , citizens will be helping the Commission to further clean up the register and purge it of all ineligible registrants as required by Section 12 of the Electoral Act.

“The Commission has consistently shared information on the voter registration exercise with Nigerians by publishing the figures as well as the detailed breakdown by states and gender’’

Yakubu said that the meeting would consider consequential steps the commission needed to take as it continues to prepare for the 2019 general elections.

On the commission’ s preparation for the Osun State Governorship election , Yakubu said all processes and activities were going according to our timetable and schedule of activities released almost a year ago.

“The last major activity was the presentation of the Voters ’ Register to each of the 48 political parties fielding candidates in the election , giving detailed information of the distribution of the 1 .6 million registered voters by Local Government Areas, Wards and Polling Units’’

Yakubu said that the Commission had been working on a multi -faceted approach to the menace of vote -buying and other sundry electoral malpractices .
“We will introduce changes to the election – day administration of our polling units , in addition to the electronic tracking of our sensitive materials .

“We are discussing with the security agencies for a more vigorous enforcement of the law against voter -inducement.

“Furthermore, we are working with the Inter – Party Advisory Council and other stakeholders on voter education and sensitisation .
This is the third election we are conducting in Osun State since the 2015 general elections.

“The first was the Ife Central State Constituency and the Osun West Senatorial District . We wish to reassure the people of Osun state that their votes will continue to count.”

He assured Nigerians that the country ’s elections would continue to meet the requirements of laws , processes and procedures as well as international best practice.

Tarok Progressive Youths Association (TAPYA) disown Tarok Elders on endorsement of Senator Useni.

The Youths in Press Conference on Friday in Jos led by the National President of TAPYA Comrade Lohnan Samson and Secretary General Barrister Singa Edward Zhattau call on all Plateau citizens to disregard the endorsement of Senator Jeremiah Useni as consensus candidate for Governor Seat come 2019.

Full Press Conference below:

Being the Text of a Press Conference Addressed by the Tarok Progressive Youth Association (TAPYA) on the 6th September, 2018 at the NUJ Press Center Jos:
THE TAROK NATION SHALL CONTINUE TO LIVE ABOVE BOARD!

May we start by registering our gratitude to the gentlemen of the press who, despite being served with a short notice, have made it to this press conference this afternoon! Being the umbrella body of the Tarok youth globally, it has become obligatory for us to address a press conference and to keep the record straight as per the press statement titled “TAROK NATION ENDORSES SENATOR (DR) J.T USENI AS CONSENSUS ASPIRANT FOR THE 2019 GUBERNATORIAL RACE IN PLATEAU STATE” jointly issued by Rev. Canon Selcan Miner and Barrister Danjuma Rimdan under the auspices of Tarok Elders Forum (TEF) on the 3rd of September, 2018.

To start with, as young people of the Tarok nation, we do not often trade words with our elders as part of our age-long values of respect for age. However, that will cease to be the case in the face of any action by the elders which is capable of jeopardizing the future of both the youth and the Tarok nation at large. Such is the scenario we face today as the earlier press statement issued by some elders in the Tarok nation has tipped the Tarok nation unto the precipice. Therefore, to toe the path of silence will be a criminal inaction on our part.

We wish to place on record that the Tarok Elders Forum hitherto inaugurated by the Ponzhi Tarok, His Royal Majesty, Mr. Edward Cirdap Zhattau (of blessed memory), was later disbanded by the paramount ruler on the 28 March, 2008 at NBTT Jos, and could not have issued a press statement on the emergence of a “consensus aspirant” as far as the gubernatorial aspiration of the Tarok nation is concerned. And with due respect to the rights of these elders to peaceful assembly and association and their freedom of expression as provided for in the Constitution, we would not stand idly by and watch as misleading information is being deposited and peddled within the public domain.

We are not unaware of the fact that there are many gubernatorial aspirants of Tarok extraction who have picked up nomination forms of their various political parties; these include, among others: Mr. Godfrey Mamzhi of the SDP, Mr. Nanzing Bako of the ANN, Senator Victor Lar, Senator Jeremiah Useni, Engineer Jimmy Cheto, Engineer Ponyak Ibrahim, all of the PDP etc., And as bona fide Tarok sons, we could not have jettisoned one for the other by way of endorsement, except where the aspirants themselves arrived at a consensus which would imply a voluntary withdrawal by the rest of the aspirants in recognition of the aspiration of one person, and not the coronation by a group of elders as is the instant case.

To the best of our knowledge, there has been no time whereby the Plateau family resolved that the 2019 election is strictly a Tarok affair, as the earlier statement by some Tarok elders would suggest. Accordingly, we need not speak of the fact that the office of the Governor is open to all qualified indigenes of Plateau State and Nigerian citizens alike and cannot be the exclusive preserve of a given ethnic nationality to warrant the statement issued by the elders concerned. We hereby view that statement as nothing but an attempt to first of all create disaffection among the Tarok gubernatorial aspirants and by extension the Tarok nation, and secondly, to place us on a collision course with the rest of the ethnic nationalities in Plateau State.

The widespread condemnation that has greeted the press statement issued by some Tarok elders has lend credence to the fact that, if there is anything that such statement has attracted to the political standing of the Tarok nation, is scorn with its attendant effect of whittling down our political clout.
Being critical stakeholders who would fight to the leas to preserve the political future of the Tarok nation, we reject any attempt to portray the Tarok nation as one that is set out to achieve a sinister ethnic agenda, as against the collectivist and engaging political approach that has, over time, defined us as a people within the larger Plateau political family.

We need not speak of the grand design to hoodwink some political benefactors outside Plateau State into making financial donation to the cause of a Tarok consensus aspirant, as it is now public knowledge. However, we consider this medium apt in admonishing such benefactors that they would only be investing in an individual and not the Tarok cause, as all the gubernatorial aspirants of Tarok extraction are fully committed like never before, in canvassing for votes from the delegates of their respective political parties.

In recognition of the fact that electoral victory in a democracy such as ours is determined by the garnering of majority votes, we would not be averse to working with anybody that will emerge as the Governor of Plateau State, as anything to contrary would be antithetical to the spirit of democracy.

We are not oblivious of the fact that some persons in their desperate bid to cause mischief would deliberately choose to interpret our position as one that is against the emergence of a Governor of Tarok extraction. Far from it! We hereby state in explicit terms that we are not against the emergence of a Tarok man as Governor come 2019, as aspirants of the Tarok extraction already on show are not short on the requisite qualification for that office; however, we must concede that in view of our electoral history and recent experience, our dream can only be realized with the support of the rest of the ethnic nationalities in Plateau State.

Being a youth socio-cultural group, we are very much aware of the numerous benefits of ethnic solidarity, but when the solidarity is such that will be inimical to the political future of not only the youth, but also that of the entire Tarok nation, we would not hesitate to send it crashing like a pack of cards.

Flowing from the above, rather than wade into the murky waters of complex partisanship, we wish to call on this group of elders to bring their wealth of experience to bear by joining hands with other elders of the Tarok nation across board with the view of resolving the lingering impasse surrounding the paramount traditional chieftaincy stool of the Ponzhi Tarok. For us, that will mark the proper beginning of the journey to resolving our challenges as a nation.

In light of the foregoing, we hereby make a clarion call on all the people of Plateau State to disregard in all respects the statement issued by the Selcan Miner led group regarding the endorsement of some consensus candidate.

We cannot conclude this press conference without registering our deep appreciation to the coalition of ethnic nationalities on the Plateau which has never doubted the political astuteness of the Tarok nation. We assure you that we as one of the ethnic nationalities will continue to engage all of you on any matter that is of interest to the whole of Plateau State.

Thank you and God bless you.
Long Live TAPYA!
Long Live Tarok Nation!
Long Live Plateau State!
Long Live Federal Republic of Nigeria
Signed:
Comrade Lohnan Samson Barrister Singa Edward Zhattau
TAPYA President Secretary–General

Fresh Attack in Rayfield leaves 3 injured

Information trickling in indicates that, yesterday Sept 6th 2018, three people sustained injuries from a fresh gun attack on a Rayfield suburb close to Rayfield resort.

The community which has been identified as “Gut” was said to have been attacked at 11pm yesterday, when gunmen numbering 6 invaded the village, opening fire on residents.

In the attack the son of the community leader, Mr Gyang Raphael and two other residents of the village Mr Nyam Mado and Mrs Kaneng Gyang (who had earlier buried one of her relatives from a prior Rayfield-Latya attack) were said to have sustained critical injuries.

Speaking one of the injured people, Mr Mado confirmed to newsmen that the attackers opened fire once Mr. Gyang Raphael sighted them and raised an alarm.

Father to the injured Nyam Mado (and a community leader of the village), Mr Samuel Mado confirmed that on hearing gunshots, people of the community trooped out to confront by attackers but that they fled immediately.

A few eyewitnesses who spoke to journalists confirmed that the attackers may have parked their vehicle close to a house in the area, prior to commencing their attack.

This signals a change of strategy for the killing brigade on the Plateau. It would be recalled that just last week the very first driver-by shooting/ambush was stage in Rayfield -where 11 people were felled by the bullets of the marauders.

Yesterday’s attack appears to confirm fears that the initial attack of last week was simply a pilot-test of a new strategy to commence a massive onslaught on inner city areas.

Useni was speaking in Abuja after he submitted his expression of interest and nomination form, at the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), National Secretariat, Wadata House, Abuja on Wednesday.

The battle for the number one seat in Plateau has begun with candidates submitting their nomination forms, preparing for the contest ahead. Useni, who is also a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, is promising to provide free education, boost Agriculture and attract foreign investors in the State.

Some of his supporters described the General as a man whom the cap fits. For now, about 16 aspirants of the PDP have collected nomination forms for the party’s governorship seat. They however, called on the party leadership to ensure credible governorship primaries. If nominated, Jeremiah Useni may be facing Governor Simon Lalong who is for now the only aspirant seeking re-election under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Plateau killings: State police a panacea to Nigeria insecurity – Bot

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

Former Chief of Staff to Ex-Governor Jonah Jang and Plateau North Senatorial aspirant, Hon. Francis Bot at the weekend said decentralization of Nigeria security apparatus to provide State police is the panacea to security woes in the country.

He lamented that villagers made up of children and women are perishing on daily basis with several others languishing at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps across the state due to persistent attacks by killer herdsmen.

Hon. Bot disclosed this at the weekend while submitting his expression of Interest and nomination forms to contest Plateau North Senatorial seat at the State Secretariat of PDP in Jos, Plateau state.

“I am of the firm believe that the best way to solve the insecurity in Nigeria is to allow states have their police. Apart from that, we should have a security system where institutions can have their own security network. Banks should be allow to train their staff to protect their banks, It don’t need to use Federal Police.

“We should have private security, we should have state security with the federal security supervising all other components of security in the country. If security is decentralize and government at the centre has a different interest, pursuing an agenda then there will be insecurity.

“But it will be difficult for the whole state to pursue the agenda of insecurity and a state that allowed her security outfit to be manipulated by the governor or the executive, the national security will now come in to checkmate and give sanction.”

Bot lamented that with daily killings in rural communities, impunity and poverty level of the country will grow to an uncontrollable stage as people will be saying foodstuff to buy what they will protect themselves.

“What is happening now, the killings in the villages is very unfortunate, the people need protection and if this continue, impunity will continue to grow. Apart from that poverty will go deeper in Nigeria, people will have to sell their food to buy what they will protect themselves and that will not be proper.

“Government should be able to provide security for the people so that people will use the little they have to feed themselves, educate themselves and to take care of their health rather than thinking of protecting themselves.”

He said it was his personal motivation and encouragement on the part of the people to join the senatorial race and not coming to hold sway for Senator Jonah Jang who has declared for Presidential election as it is being insinuated by his opponents.

“I am motivated by my personal desire to serve the people and I was also encouraged into it by the people themselves because they have seen in me the potential of fair and credible representation to tackle the security challenges that has ravaged the zone through good legislation.

“In politics there is always campaign of calumny, I don’t think myself and Baba Jang have sat and discussed, the baseless assertion that i am holding sway to Jang is just to mar this project. I believe that Jang is a man of honour and integrity and he wouldn’t want to discuss such a thing with me.”

He also called on people of the state to support the PDP at all times

Dalung asks Buhari to declare state of emergency in Plateau, Zamfara, Benue

Solomon Dalung, minister of youth and sports development, has asked the federal government to declare state of emergency in states experiencing incessant killings.

Dalung said this is necessitated by the failure of the security agencies to end the attacks and bring the killers to book.

Plateau, Zamfara, Benue and Taraba are among states where many lives have been lost in 2018 alone.

Addressing state house corespondents in Abuja on Friday, Dalung blamed the killings on the “collapse” of local government administration in the country.

He said it has become imperative to for various parties including youth groups to work with the government in addressing the crisis.

“Collapse of local government administration has contributed immensely to the inability of the security personnel to arrest the problem,” the minister said.

“The Plateau crisis can be traced to many years of inaction by previous and current administrations despite the federal government’s efforts to address the problem.

“It is disheartening that Plateau state has been witnessing killings of innocent citizens in the last four to five days and this is very annoying and disturbing to the government and inhabitants of the state.

“It has become imperative for the federal government to declare state of emergency in Plateau and other troubled states across the country so as to put a stop to the killings.”

He added that he has alerted the federal executive council on the need to take “drastic and emergency measures” to tackle the crisis because “the local and state governments have failed in their responsibility of offering useful information to security agents despite the huge resources being spent on security.”

“Security personnel alone cannot achieve much in addressing the problem without the support and cooperation of the state and local governments as well as the local communities,” he said.

“There is the need for collaboration between all the three tiers of government, the local communities and Youth Councils in order to find a lasting solution to the crisis.”

Dalung, who is from Plateau, is having a running battle with Simon Lalong, the governor.

A US-trained financial analyst and real estate entrepreneur, Dapo Ademola- Adesina on Monday outlined his blueprint if elected into the House of Representatives in the 2019 general elections.

Among his plans include urgently setting in motion the necessary machinery to address the imminent security threats to the nation including the menace of Fulani herdsmen and championing the demand for the restructuring of Nigeria which, according to him, was long overdue.

Adesina studied Architecture at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife and later proceeded to the United States of America to obtain another Bachelors and MBA degrees in Finance at the DePaul University.

He is currently the President/CEO of Shimarch Group of Companies and also the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive of Prof. Ademola Adesina Memorial Foundation.

Adesina, popularly called Dapooza, an indigene of Igbajo in Boluwaduro Local Government Area of Osun State is seeking election into the Federal House of representative of Nigeria in Boluwaduro/Ifedayo/Illa constituency under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2019.

He said, “Nigeria is long overdue for restructuring. Specifically issues of fairness, justice and equity are very necessary areas that need to be re-addressed to reduce conflict and agitation, thereby encouraging a healthy completion among the federating states.

“When elected  by the grace of God and as a member of the Federal House of Representatives, I and my colleagues would urgently set in motion the necessary machinery to address the imminent security threats  to the nation including the Fulani herdmen.

“My going into politics is an opportuniy to serve my constituents and by extension the nation of Nigeria at large, Secondly it is an opportunity to liberate my people from maladministration and mis- governance which has evidently manifested in the educational, socio-economic and the basic standard of living.

“Finally, my venture into politics is to continue the good work of  my late father, Prof Shim Ademola Adesina (former Minister of State for Agriculture) of blessed memory and sustain his legacy.

“Having said all of this, there’s urgent need for a  vibrant and egalitarian personality that is driven by passion and pragmatic result. Also, there is also the need for a youth personality with reasonable exposure and requisite knowledge of modern day politics.”

Jang: If elected president, I will put an end to the killings and tackle corruption

ABUJA- Immediate past governor of Plateau state, Air Commodore Jonah Jang (retd), Monday, submitted his Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms to run for the office of the President in 2019 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with a pledge to tackle corruption and put an end to the killings going on in some parts of the country, if elected.

Jang who stated this at the party’s headquarters in Abuja while addressing journalists, also took a swipe at what he called Nigeria’s gradual decent to a Banana Republic under the watch of President Muhammadu Buhari. The lawmaker further called on the leadership of the party to leverage on his experience as a retired military officer, who many years ago, administered some states that are today epicentres of violent clashes. “I have decided to join the race because I have seen what Nigerians are going through.

Under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigeria is becoming a pariah state. Killings are going on with stomach of pregnant women tore open. “Any government that cannot guarantee the safety of lives and property of its citizens has lost its legitimacy,” he said, adding that if elected, “The nation’s borders will be secured and we will run a people’s government. There would be an end to borrowing, especially borrowing without commensurate result to show.” Berating government’s anti-corruption fight, the Presidential hopeful pledged to wage a total war against the menace, saying what the APC government of President Buhari has done in the past three and a half years was to go after political opponents. He added, “Fighting corruption will be our priority but not in the way the present government is going about it.

We will look at how the corruption begins in the first place. “I will create a system where owners of the money stashed away in foreign countries are engaged with those countries on ways to recover the stolen funds.” A believer in restructuring, the PDP chieftain further said the much craved idea would have to follow due legislative process, saying, “Restructuring would not be decreed into existence. It has to pass through the legal process of constitutional amendments. We will ensure that this country is restructured to give every part a sense of belonging.” He also promised to revive the education sector to make it address the scourge of unemployment in the country.
